Saints Explain the Significance of Amrit Snan

The Nagas of Niranjani Akhada in Prayagraj, during the Maha Kumbh 2025, emphasized the importance of taking an Amrit Snan (immortal bath). According to the saints, performing this bath is equivalent to the merit gained from performing a thousand Ashvamedha Yajnas.

The holy event began on the day of the full moon in the month of Paush, with the grand celebration of Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj. The saints and Nagas, in total, number thirteen akhadas that establish their camps here during the event. On Makar Sankranti, millions of devotees participated in the Amrit Snan, making the scene magnificent. Various akhadas performed grand processions with elephants, horses, and camels, and the saints and sadhus, dressed in their sacred attire, reached the Sangam bank to take a holy dip.

Significance of Amrit Snan

According to Siddh Puri, a Nagasadhu from the Niranjani Akhada, it is essential to wake up at 4 AM, bathe, and then meditate. He mentioned, "Whether one performs idol worship or not, one should always remember God. The one who runs this world is supreme and eternal." He explained that during the battle between gods and demons, wherever drops of nectar fell, the site became the venue for a Maha Kumbh. Every six years, there is an Ardh Kumbh, and after 12 years, the grand Maha Kumbh occurs. Taking the royal bath during these events helps cleanse sins accumulated over several lifetimes."

Sadhvi Sonia Nath's Experience

Sadhvi Sonia Nath, a member of the Akhada, shared her personal experience and said, "I am new to this Akhada, but I feel blessed in the saffron robes. We are always committed to the protection of Sanatan Dharma. Just as there are relationships in family life, a Guru treats us like a mother or a sibling, sometimes reprimanding us for our own good." She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to become a Sadhu in this life, attributing it to the merits accumulated in previous lives.

The Power of Ashvamedha Yajnas

Mahant Adittanand Shastri of the Agni Akhada highlighted that the benefits of performing 1,000 Ashvamedha Yajnas are obtained by those who take the Amrit Snan during Makar Sankranti and Maha Kumbh. However, he also warned that not everyone can access this benefit, as it requires one to relinquish all worldly concerns and take part in the holy bath. After Amrit Snan, devotees meditate on the deities and engage in discussions about spiritual knowledge.
