Career in water
transport sector fast Increasing opportunities
-Dr. Jayantilal Bhandari
Certainly, as business is growing rapidly through water
transport, employment and career opportunities are increasing in the water
transport sector. Career opportunities in water transport are increasing due to
the continued successful implementation of PM Gatishakti Yojana , New Logistics Policy and
Maritime India Vision 2030. It is clear that water transport is the preferred
mode of transport for goods all over the world. A large amount of goods are
being transported through inland water transport system in Europe , America , China and neighboring
Bangladesh and due to them employment opportunities are at a high level. Now, just as the targets
set to make India's economy the third largest economy in the world by 2027 and
the country a developed country by 2047 are to be achieved, it is necessary to
make the country a developed country by 2047. Maritime transport will play an
important role in the world, and career opportunities in water transport will
increase. This is the reason why the importance of various courses related to
water transport has increased.
Water transport is the
new lifeline of transport, employment opportunities will increase
It is noteworthy that The government seems to be moving
forward with new policies to make water transport the lifeline of India's
transportation. The waterways, which are called natural routes, were once the lifeline
of Indian transportation. But due to changes over time and modern means of
transportation, the water transport sector in India was neglected a lot in the
last century. India has a 7500 km coastline. While there is 14,500 km river
route . India's sea coastline covers 9 states and 4 union territories. On the
vast coast of the country , there are 13
major big and 212 small ports. The big ports are Haldia , Paradip , Visakhapatnam , Kamaraj , Chennai , Tuticorin and Port Blair
on the east coast. On the west coast are Cochin , New Mangalore , Mormugao , Jawaharlal Nehru
, Kandla and Mumbai ports.
Indian ports have remained important for centuries for their rich historical
heritage and global trade and foreign trade from ports has been growing
continuously . At present, 95 percent of India's trade by volume and 70 percent
by value is done
through ports.
Modernization of ports
and growing maritime trade increase opportunities
At present, to increase the country's global trade and
achieve high export targets, the strategy of modernizing the ports and making
them competitive for maritime trade is being rapidly advanced. On August 30 ,
2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the Rs 76,000
crore Vadhavan port project in Palghar district of Maharashtra . On this occasion, the
Prime Minister said that Vadhavan will be the largest container port in the
country. The aim of this project is to establish a world-class maritime gateway
in India , which will play an
important role in meeting the needs of large container ships. He said that the
Vadhavan port will be one of the largest deep-water ports in India. It will
provide direct connectivity to international shipping routes , reducing transit time
and cost. This port will increase India's maritime connectivity and further
strengthen India's position as a global trade hub.
Indian ports, being the gateways to international trade,
have undoubtedly made the maritime (coastal) states a preferred destination for
industrial development in the country. Minimal transportation bottlenecks along
with reduced logistics costs are the main factors driving industrial
development in the areas near ports. Industries such as power , electronics , apparel , leather , furniture , refineries and
petrochemicals ,
cement , steel and food
processing are rapidly growing in the port areas. As a result, states like
Maharashtra ,
Tamil Nadu , West Bengal , Odisha , Gujarat , Andhra Pradesh , Kerala are contributing
significantly to the country's development story. It is also important to note
that the importance of ports is clearly visible in the establishment of Special
Economic Zones (SEZs). Out of some 377 SEZs notified in the country, about 240
SEZs are located in maritime states. Adani Port Limited , the country's largest
SEZ is located at Mundra Port in Kutch district of Gujarat.
Multidimensional
campaigns for marine development open new avenues for employment
Certainly, over the last decade, India has been moving
strategically to make its ports the pivot of maritime trade. Private ports have
been encouraged. India is rapidly modernizing its ports with the aim of
improving their efficiency in handling cargo and ships. Port-led development
has received significant impetus since the launch of the Sagarmala programme in
2015. As of March 2022, out of a total of 802 projects with a stipulated cost
of Rs 5.40 lakh crore for the Sagarmala programme, 221 projects worth Rs 1.12
lakh crore have already been completed , while 581 projects worth Rs 4.28 lakh crore are in
various stages of development. Various infrastructure projects are being
accelerated through the PM Gati-Shakti National Master Plan launched in 2021.
PM Gati-Shakti focuses on coordinated planning and execution of multi-modal
connectivity projects which also include ports. It is worth noting that private
participation is the main strategy of port-led development. In this regard, all
projects with investment of more than Rs 100 crore are listed under the
National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP).
It is also important to note that the Maritime National
Logistics Portal (NLG), which has been launched in January 2023 , is one such It is a
one-stop platform that connects all stakeholders of the logistics community
through IT. The aim is to improve efficiency and transparency while reducing
cost and time delays. The government has allowed up to 100 percent foreign
direct investment (FDI) under the automatic route for port construction and
maintenance projects. Apart from this , the National Maritime Development Program (NMDP) is also
highly beneficial to develop the maritime sector with a planned outlay of $
11.8 billion. Now a new chapter is moving forward to benefit the country from
the maritime economy by developing ports and reducing logistics costs under the
Maritime India Mission 2030 .
Along with all this
, the Maritime Amritkal
Vision 2047 along with the comprehensive roadmap decided during the Global
Maritime India Summit (GMIS) is set to give new heights to India's maritime
sector. Which includes an investment of Rs 80,000 lakh crore. It includes
aspirations in logistics , infrastructure
and shipping ,
which is the pillar of
India's ' Blue Economy ' . In this way,
multi-dimensional employment opportunities are increasing in this sector due to
the development of ports and campaigns to increase maritime trade.
Big investment in water
transport will increase employment
Undoubtedly PM Gati Shakti Due to heavy investments under
the scheme and new logistics policy, there is now a huge potential for meeting
the freight needs through water transport due to the vast waterways and major
rivers of the country and also more employment opportunities. Are. Most of the
power plants in the country are facing problems due to shortage of coal . Coal
is not able to reach on time through road and rail transport. In such a
situation, there are regular and economical possibilities of coal
transportation through inland waterways. Many of our big development projects
are going to be realized near the national waterways. Many new factories and
hydropower units have opened in these areas. Transporting heavy machinery by
road in their construction is not an easy task. Water transport has an
important role in this. Transportation of large quantities of grains and
fertilizers is possible through water transport. Now in view of the
extraordinary investment under the PM Gatishakti Yojana, it can be said that more
employment opportunities will be created in this sector in future .
Various Career Areas in
Water Transport
Certainly, there are multifaceted career opportunities in
water transport. From commercial work to marine engineering, employment
opportunities in water transport are booming. There are many jobs in water
transport for marine engineers , port operations
engineers , logistics and navigation
experts and various jobs related to these fields . There is a huge demand for
employees and officers . There is a huge demand for water transport designers , water transport planners
, water transport
operation experts in the government sector and private sector. The demand for
water transport etc. is increasing. There are also bright employment
opportunities in water transport companies working in the private sector .
It is worth noting that naval architects can create the
framework or structure of the boat , but marine engineers are needed to design all the
internal power and machinery systems of the boat. Without marine engineers , the boat would have no
engine , electronics , hydraulics , lighting , refrigeration or
controls. To be a good marine engineer , you must be very versatile , creative and open to learning. Marine engineering is an
exciting career because every boat or ship is different and you will be
responsible for every system on the ship. Almost every boat requires engines , propellers , steering , transmission , pumps , electrical systems, etc.
Naval engineers work on naval ships. A naval ship is one of the largest and
most complex engineered systems in the world.
There is no doubt that employment opportunities in ocean
engineering have also increased. Every instrument , every device and every
process in the ocean environment is the creation and responsibility of ocean
engineers. The ocean environment is very corrosive , unstable and often
unpredictable. They develop transportation systems , plan new uses for
waterways , design deep-water ports and
integrate land and water transportation systems and modes.
Skills required for a
career in water transport
Since water transport is a specialized sector and
requires technical skills, interest and expertise in areas related to port
operations , logistics and navigation
etc. are important for a career in this sector . There is no dearth of good opportunities
in the field of water transport for youth who are courageous, confident , aware of their
responsibilities and alert and strong in facing challenges .
Which water transport
course to choose
To make a career in the field of water transport, the
educational qualification for various specialized courses varies. Courses
related to water transport such as logistics, port operations, navigation etc.
are conducted by various maritime institutes, shipping companies and management
institutes of the country. Generally, after 12th, one can take steps towards
courses related to water transport. In such a situation, the youth who have the
interest , ability and capacity to
make a career in the field of water transport , can choose the appropriate employment-oriented
course as per their choice. You can move forward on the path of a good career
in the field of water transport .
