On January 15, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated three new warships – INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vagsheer – to the Indian Navy at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. This step is a significant achievement in strengthening India’s maritime security and indigenous defense capabilities.
All these warships have been designed and built at Mumbai’s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), showcasing an excellent example of the "Make in India" initiative. The commissioning of these ships marks a historic moment for the Indian Navy, which will elevate the country's defense capabilities and strengthen maritime security.
Enhancing Naval Strength:
The inclusion of INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vagsheer will significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s combat power. These warships will send a strong message to adversaries that India is fully prepared to safeguard its maritime borders.
INS Surat:
INS Surat is a Stealth Guided Missile Destroyer equipped with state-of-the-art technology to combat enemies at sea.
INS Nilgiri:
INS Nilgiri is an advanced Stealth Frigate designed for blue-water operations, featuring radar signature reduction technology.
INS Vagsheer:
INS Vagsheer is a Scorpene-class submarine equipped with cutting-edge weapons and systems, making it capable of stealth operations at sea.
Prime Minister Modi remarked that India is now being recognized as a reliable and responsible partner in strengthening global security. Additionally, INS Surat and INS Nilgiri have special residential facilities for female officers and sailors, promoting gender inclusion in the Navy.
