Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, former Director General of Indian Council of Medical Research and Chief Scientist of World Health Organization, has been appointed as Principal Advisor in Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) for National Tuberculosis Elimination Program (NTEP).
She will serve in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on pro bono basis.
As the Chief Advisor for NTEP, Dr. Swaminathan will provide technical advice on the overall strategy to achieve the goals, suggest policy directions and necessary course corrections for optimal results, and advise on research strategy. Her appointment comes at a crucial juncture where the deadline set by the Center to eliminate TB is drawing closer.
According to the India TB Report released by the Center, India contributes 25% of the world's TB patients and more than 25 lakh new cases of TB will be reported in India in 2024.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said in a statement that Dr Swaminathan will also assist in forming expert groups with top talent globally. Additionally, she will support the Union Health Ministry, state authorities and development partners in assessing the impact of the programme.
