World Population Day is observed on July 11 each year to raise awareness on the topic of global population growth. Established by the United Nations in 1989, the day serves as an important platform to raise awareness about population issues affecting every corner of our planet. On July 11, 1987, the world population was recorded at 5 billion. This event caught the attention of Dr. K.C. Zakaria, a senior demographer at the World Bank, who suggested celebrating the day annually. The United Nations, recognizing the population-related challenges, adopted the suggestion and officially established World Population Day in 1989. Since its inception, World Population Day has evolved into a powerful tool for education and advocacy. It has consistently drawn attention to important issues such as reproductive health, family planning, gender equality, and sustainable development. Over the years, the observance has played a vital role in shaping policies, influencing public opinion, and galvanizing action at the local, national, and international levels.
