Kenya's Ruth Chepngetich made history on Sunday by breaking the world record for the women's marathon in Chicago. She finished the race with an unofficial time of two hours, nine minutes and 56 seconds, almost two minutes behind the previous best. Chepngetich won her third title in Chicago and tied with Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa, who set it last year in Berlin. After breaking the record, Chepngetich said, "My dream has come true." Chepngetich picked up the pace from the start, running the first five kilometers in 15 minutes and by halfway she had created a gap of 14 seconds between herself and Kebede. 2019 world champion Chepngetich bowed down exhausted after finishing the race and dedicated her performance to compatriot Kelvin Kiptum, who broke the men's world record in Chicago a year ago. Kenya's John Korir won the men's Chicago Marathon title in a personal best time of 2 hours 2 minutes 44 seconds on October 14. Korir, 27, claimed his first major marathon win.
