The international conference titled "Pre Lokmanthan: Non-codified herbal medicine systems - Conservation, promotion and action plan" is being held at Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya in the capital Bhopal on September 21 and 22, 2024. The two-day conference is a joint event of several prestigious institutions such as the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Pragya Pravah, Dattopant Thengadi Research Institute, Anthropos India Foundation, and Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication. These traditions are usually transmitted orally from generation to generation, adopting a holistic view of health and considering the physical, mental and spiritual well-being of individuals. These practices in the social and cultural life of communities rely on evidence and observation arising from experience rather than formal scientific validation. They include various methods such as herbal treatment, spiritual healing, physical manipulation and special dietary methods. In the pre-conference, some strategies will be discussed to reduce the challenges faced by healers. Some important questions will be discussed like whether fair trade standards should be established to ensure fair compensation to herbal healers for their contribution and resources. Padma awardees are participating in the conference. The main theme of the conference is - non-codified herbal medicine systems and their importance in rural India where access to formal healthcare is limited. Local healers having special knowledge in biodiversity will demonstrate their techniques using plants and natural resources for the treatment of various diseases. The main topics include - herbal medicine in the context of climate change, biodiversity conservation, - health communication related to traditional medicine, impact of commercialization and threat of bio-nuisance. The conference will also discuss the challenges faced by those who practice herbal medicine, lack of government support and intellectual property rights. Herbal healers workshop will be a special attraction on this occasion. During this, patients will be treated using traditional treatment methods. Knowledge about herbal medicines will be shared. It will provide participants including students, researchers and general public a first-hand experience of traditional herbal medicine systems.
