21 Dams and Barrages to be Built in Madhya Pradesh: 40 Lakh People in 13 Districts to Get Drinking Water

The Parvati-Kalisindh-Chambal and Rajasthan Eastern Canal (PKC-ERCP) project will cost around ₹72,000 crore. Of this, 90% of the funds will be provided by the central government. The Madhya Pradesh government will spend ₹35,000 crore, while the Rajasthan government will contribute ₹37,000 crore. This means that the central government will provide 90% of the funds for the share allocated to Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

This project will transform the lives of 3,217 villages in 13 districts of Madhya Pradesh. A total of 21 new water structures, including 17 dams and 4 barrages, will be built in Madhya Pradesh. The Malwa and Chambal regions will see 6.13 lakh hectares of land becoming irrigated. Drinking water will be supplied to 40 lakh people. Additionally, the 64-year-old Chambal Canal system in the Gwalior-Chambal division will be dismantled and rebuilt using modern techniques. In Rajasthan, 5 new barrages will be constructed, while 4 dams will be renovated.

Key Areas and Projects:

1. Parvati Basin:

Barrages will be constructed at Shyampur and Karaiya in Sehore, and two dams will be built at Paddon. With an investment of ₹8,000 crore, 1.6 lakh hectares of land will be irrigated.

2. Kalisindh Basin:

Benefiting Shajapur, Agar, Ujjain, and Dewas, the ₹3,500 crore investment will result in the construction of the Lakhundar Complex and Ranjit Sagar Dam. Three irrigation projects, including the Kalisindh Diversion Complex, will be established. A total of 77,000 hectares of land will be irrigated.

3. Upper Chambal Basin:

Six dams will be built between Mandsaur and Indore, with an investment of ₹9,000 crore. These dams, located on the Chambal, Kshipra, Chamla, and Sivna rivers, will provide storage of 550 MCM of water. Over 1.88 lakh hectares of land will be irrigated. The project also includes efforts to make the Kshipra River flowable for the 2028 Simhastha and projects in Severkhedi, Silarkhedi, and Chitavad.

4. Kuno Basin:

With a ₹12,000 crore investment, six irrigation projects will be built in Guna, Shivpuri, Morena, and Sheopur districts. Four dams and two barrages will be constructed. This project will increase the irrigation capacity in 6.36 lakh hectares in Madhya Pradesh and 4.03 lakh hectares in Rajasthan.
