The Kerala Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution urging the central government to officially change the name of the state from 'Kerala' to 'Keralaam'. The state assembly has passed this proposal for the second time, as the Union Home Ministry had suggested some technical changes after reviewing the earlier proposal.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan presented this proposal in the assembly. Vijayan wants the central government to change the name of the southern state from 'Kerala' to 'Keralaam' in all the languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of the country.
While presenting the proposal, the Chief Minister said that the state is called 'Keralaam' in Malayalam and the demand for creating a unified Kerala for the Malayalam-speaking communities has been raised strongly since the time of the national freedom struggle.
Vijayan said, "But the name of our state is written as Kerala in the First Schedule of the Constitution. This Assembly requests the Central Government to take immediate steps to amend it as 'Keralaam' under Article-3 of the Constitution and change its name to 'Keralaam' in all the languages mentioned in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution."
Sources in the Assembly Secretariat said that the House had unanimously passed a similar resolution in August last year and sent it to the Center, but the Union Home Ministry had suggested some technical changes in it.
After presenting the proposal, the Chief Minister said that some changes are required in the earlier proposal. This proposal was accepted by the members of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).
