The United Nations has warned in a new report that a steady lack of ambition and climate action by countries around the world over the past three years means the goal of keeping global temperatures below 1.5 degrees Celsius will soon be missed. The United Nations Environment Programme said continuing with current policies means the world will be headed for a 3.1 degree Celsius temperature rise before the end of the century, while implementing promised reforms will lead to a maximum increase of 2.6 degrees Celsius - well above the level at which climate change tipping points may be crossed. Little progress has been made in the past few years despite repeated calls for strong action plans. To underline the lack of action, Madagascar is the only country to come forward with a strengthened 2030 climate target this year, according to UNEP. This development does little to change the outlook for global emissions. "There has been no change in the emissions gap," chief climate adviser Anne Olhoff said in an interview. "Countries have not responded to calls from the last three COPs to strengthen their 2030 targets and, as a result, we are facing the same emissions gap and some catastrophic temperature projections." The world has still not overcome rising CO2 emissions, with the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere increasing by 1.3 percent last year. The landmark Paris Agreement in 2015 set a goal of limiting global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and ideally to 1.5 degrees Celsius. To meet the more ambitious goal, countries must collectively commit to cutting emissions by 42 percent by the end of the decade and 57 percent by 2035, compared with 2019 levels. “We need global mobilisation at an unprecedented scale and speed – starting now, even before the next round of climate pledges – otherwise the 1.5°C target will soon be lost,” said UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen.
