NATO has appointed Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as its next Secretary General. Rutte has been given this responsibility at a time when the war in Ukraine continues and it is a critical time for European security.
Rutte's appointment was approved during a meeting of NATO ambassadors at the headquarters of the 32-nation alliance in Brussels. US President Joe Biden and his counterparts will formally welcome him at a summit in Washington from July 9 to 11.
The Prime Minister of the Netherlands will take over as Secretary General on October 1. He will replace Norway's Jens Stoltenberg. Stoltenberg has spent more than a decade in this post. To maintain continuity after Russia invaded Ukraine in the year 2022, his term was repeatedly extended.
Stoltenberg said, 'I welcome the election of Mark Rutte by NATO allies as my successor. Mark is a strong leader. I wish him success. It is important to strengthen NATO to deal with the challenges of today and the future. I know that I am leaving NATO in good hands.
