27 September - High Performance Computing Systems Arka and Arunika for Weather and Climate Research inaugurated.

Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the High Performance Computing (HPC) System for Weather and Climate Research, acquired by the Ministry of Earth Sciences. An investment of Rs 850 crore has been made on this ambitious project. This project is a significant leap in India's computational capabilities for more reliable and accurate weather and climate forecasting, especially for extreme events. It is located at two major sites - Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune and National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) in Noida. The IITM system is equipped with an impressive capacity of 11.77 Petaflops and 33 Petabytes of storage, while the NCMRWF facility has a capacity of 8.24 Petaflops and 24 Petabytes of storage. Additionally, there is a dedicated standalone system with a capacity of 1.9 Petaflops for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning applications. With this, the total computing power of the Ministry of Earth Sciences will increase to 22 Petaflops, a substantial increase from the previous capacity of 6.8 Petaflops. These state-of-the-art systems are named after astronomical units associated with the Sun. The previous systems were named Aditya, Bhaskar, Pratyush and Mihir. The new HPC systems are named 'Ark' and 'Arunika', indicating their relation to the Sun - the primary energy source for the Earth. The advanced computational framework will enable the development of sophisticated models leveraging advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, significantly improving the last-mile services provided to various stakeholders. The advanced computational capabilities provided by the HPC systems will enable the Ministry of Earth Sciences to further enhance the existing data assimilation capabilities and refine the physics and dynamics of its global weather forecast models at higher horizontal resolution. In addition, regional models will achieve improved resolutions of 1 km or less over select Indian domains. These high-resolution models will significantly enhance the accuracy and lead time of predictions related to tropical cyclones, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, hail, heat waves, droughts and other extreme weather events.
