State Election Commissioner Basant Pratap Singh will continue to hold his post for now. His tenure is ending on 30 June but the process of new appointment has not been completed yet, so he will continue to hold the post for now. This arrangement can last for a maximum of six months. It is believed that after three months, when the tenure of Chief Secretary Veera Rana is completed, he can be given a chance.
Basant Pratap Singh was appointed by the Congress government. He took charge on 1 January 2019 and it is ending on 30 June. The appointment was to be done before this but the process could not be completed due to the Lok Sabha elections. Since this post is not kept vacant, therefore, Rule 5 of the State Election Commissioner Service Conditions Rules, 1994 provides that after the expiry of the term, the State Election Commissioner shall continue to hold the post till the appointment of his successor and assuming office, but this period shall not exceed six months in any case, i.e. Basant Pratap Singh can remain on this post till December 2024.
