Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on October 29 presented a vision to turn India into the world's top automobile hub within the next decade at the Spain-India Business Summit held in Mumbai. Citing India's competitive advantages in production cost and labour, Gadkari expressed confidence in the country's ability to become a leading global player. Gadkari said, "The size of our automobile industry is 22 lakh crores. The size of China's automobile industry is 44 lakh crores and that of the US is 78 lakh crores. Now, our target is to make India's automobile industry number one in the world within 10 years." Gadkari said that India's production cost is much lower than other countries, but high logistics cost is a problem for India. Our logistics cost is coming down with the development of infrastructure, better roads and ports. Gadkari said, "In the US and European countries it is 12 per cent and in the Indian scenario it is going up to 14 to 16 per cent. So, this is the first time we have decided to reduce this cost. We now have a lot of express highways, 36 green access control express highways. Our NHI is triple-A rating." Discussing India's progress in sustainable technology, Gadkari spoke about innovative water and waste management initiatives. Gadkari informed, "We have implemented water sewage, 90 ml of Mathura's effluent is getting converted into clean water and that water is being given to Indian oil refinery in Mathura. For the first time when I was the water resources minister, we had planned it for hybrid annuity. 40 per cent from the government and 60 per cent from the investor. Bio, alternative fuel instead of dependence on fossil fuels."
