To strengthen security during the Amarnath Yatra 2025, the Jammu & Kashmir government has declared both the Pahalgam and Baltal routes as No-Fly Zones from July 1 to August 10. The pilgrimage itself will take place from July 3 to August 9.
All aerial devices including drones, UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), and balloons are strictly prohibited along the entire Yatra path. This decision follows past security threats such as the Pahalgam attack.
However, the ban does not apply to medical evacuation, disaster management, or surveillance flights conducted by security forces. A separate Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will be issued for these exceptions.
Pahalgam Route
The Pahalgam route is easier and takes approximately 3 days to reach the cave shrine. The journey begins from Chandanwari, 16 km from the base camp. The path ascends gradually to Pissu Top (after 3 km) and then to Sheshnag, a 9 km trek from Pissu Top. On the next day, pilgrims reach Panchtarni (14 km), from where the cave is just 6 km away.
Baltal Route
This is a shorter but steeper route of 14 km. It is preferred by those with limited time but is challenging, especially for elderly pilgrims, due to narrow and risky paths.
Special Security Arrangements for 2025 Yatra
- For the first time, jammers will be deployed to protect the convoy, managed by CAPF (Central Armed Police Forces).
- A total of 581 companies of armed forces (approx. 42,000–58,000 personnel) will be stationed.
- 156 companies were already in place; 425 additional companies will be deployed by June 10.
- Verification of pony carriers (those who carry pilgrims on shoulders) is mandatory. Criminals will be barred from this service.
- Tagging of horses and mules to allow real-time tracking and prevent deviation from the designated route.
- Security measures include: Road Opening Parties, Quick Action Teams, Bomb Disposal Squads, K9 Units (specially trained dogs), and drone surveillance.
