Armed Forces to Purchase Carbines and Torpedoes Worth ₹4,666 Crore

The Indian government is leaving no stone unturned in enhancing the combat capabilities of its armed forces. The day after the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) approved the purchase of defense equipment and weapons worth ₹79,000 crore for the armed forces, the Ministry of Defence signed contracts worth ₹4,666 crore on December 30 to purchase 4.25 lakh close-quarter battle carbines and 48 heavy-weight torpedoes for the army and navy.

The Ministry announced that contracts for battle carbines and related accessories worth ₹2,770 crore were signed with Bharat Forge Limited and PLR Systems Private Limited for the Indian Army and the Indian Navy.

This achievement is a result of the continuous efforts to equip Indian soldiers with world-class strike capabilities and replace outdated systems with state-of-the-art indigenous technology under the "Atmanirbhar Bharat" initiative.

The contract for 48 heavy-weight torpedoes and associated equipment worth ₹1,896 crore was signed with Italy's WASS Submarine Systems SRL for the Kalvari-class submarines of the Navy. This will enhance the combat capabilities of six Kalvari-class submarines. The delivery of these torpedoes will start from April 2028 and will be completed by early 2030. These torpedoes come with advanced operational capabilities and cutting-edge technical features.
