Assam's Culture Minister Bimal Bora received this prestigious certificate in Paris. This certification was granted for "Moidam - The Mound Burial System of the Ahom Dynasty."

On social media platform X, Bimal Bora said, "A fantastic Magh Bihu gift for Assam, as Charai Dev Moidam receives UNESCO World Heritage status. This is a moment of pride, and congratulations to all the people of Assam from my side." He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, whose support and efforts made this achievement possible.

Chief Minister Sarma expressed his happiness by saying, "On the occasion of Bhogali Bihu, we received good wishes from UNESCO, and what could be better than this? We have received the official certificate for Charai Dev Moidam's inclusion in the World Heritage list. 2024 has been a good year for Assam, and 2025 will be even better."

First Cultural Site in Northeast to Receive UNESCO Recognition

Charai Dev Moidam is the first cultural site from Northeast India to receive this recognition. The decision to grant this honor was made during the 46th World Heritage Committee meeting held in India in July. It is the first time that a site from Northeast India has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list under the cultural category. Assam's Kaziranga and Manas National Parks are also UNESCO World Heritage Sites. World Heritage sites are categorized into cultural, natural, and mixed categories.

What is Charai Dev Moidam?

Charai Dev Moidam, with its mound-like structures resembling grassy hills, is considered sacred by the Ahom community. Each Moidam is considered a resting place for an Ahom ruler or dignitary. Along with their remains, valuable artifacts and treasures are preserved here.

In the Moidam burial system, the remains of the deceased are buried in an underground chamber, and a mound or memorial is constructed above it. The Moidam symbolizes Assam's rich cultural heritage and identity. Prime Minister Modi had selected Moidams of the Ahom community as heritage sites from 52 locations across India. This proposal was made by Assam's Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Charai Dev Moidam is also known as Assam's pyramid. It is home to over 90 mounds. These mounds are not only burial sites but also serve as an important cultural and historical heritage of Assam.
