Assam's 'Moidams' have been included in the list of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites on 26 July. This announcement has been made during the 46th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting. For the first time, a heritage from the Northeast has made it to this list.
'Moidams' are unique mound-like structures like pyramids. They were used by the Tai-Ahom dynasty to bury the members of their dynasty along with their beloved objects.
The 46th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting is being organized at the Bharat Mandapam International Exhibition and Convention Center (IECC) in New Delhi. UNESCO i.e. United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations. UNESCO is headquartered in Paris and has more than 50 regional offices around the world. It has 194 member countries and 12 associate members. UNESCO was established on November 16, 1945.
