Ayushman Bharat Provides Relief to Hearts – Cardiology Treatment Tops in Spending
Ayushman Bharat Scheme has completed 7 years since its launch on 12 September 2018. In this period, over 90 million people across India have received free treatment under the scheme. Notably, the scheme has provided massive relief to heart patients.
The highest expenditurecardiac (heart-related) diseases. Nationwide, a total of ₹4222 crore has been spent on cardiology treatments. When heart surgeries are included, the total crosses ₹5500 crore. Without this scheme, these expenses would have come directly from poor patients’ pockets.
The highest number of beneficiaries under Ayushman Bharat have been those treated under general medicine — over 1.10 crore (11 million) people received care in both private and government hospitals. The second-largest group was patients suffering from infectious diseases, significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, during which many patients received free treatment through the scheme.

Hospital Participation by State
While UP leads in card issuance, it also has the highest number of empanelled hospitals: 5901. In contrast, Madhya Pradesh has 1446 hospitals under the scheme – including 818 government and 628 private institutions.
Many hospitals in MP offer limited specialties. Major private hospitals in the state have shown low participation in the scheme. Meanwhile, other states like Karnataka, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu have wider coverage.
