The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development has appointed Vijaya Rahatkar as the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women. She has also been the Chairperson of the Maharashtra State Women's Commission from 2016 to 2021. According to a press note issued by the ministry on Friday, Rahatkar has been appointed to this post for three years or till the age of 65 (whichever is earlier). She will be the 9th Chairperson of the Commission. During her tenure in the Maharashtra Women's Commission, she initiated welfare schemes like Saksham (assistance to acid attack victims), Prajwala (linking self-help groups with central government schemes) and Suhita. She also worked on legal reforms, focusing on issues such as the POCSO Act, anti-triple talaq cell and anti-human trafficking units.
