Bihar 35% Women Reservation in Government Jobs Limited to Permanent Residents

The Bihar Cabinet decided on July 8 that the 35% reservation for women in government jobs will now be limited to permanent residents of the state. This decision comes just months before the elections, as the demand for the domicile policy in government jobs has been increasing.

Additional Chief Secretary (Cabinet Secretariat) S. Siddharth said, "The Cabinet approved an important proposal by the General Administration Department, under which 35% reservation for women in government jobs will be limited only to the permanent residents of Bihar. This new policy will enhance financial independence and job security for the women of the state."

The government had implemented a 35% reservation for women in government jobs at all levels in 2016. Earlier, women from any state could benefit from this. However, the demand for domicile policy has gained momentum ahead of the upcoming elections. Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav has promised that if his party, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), forms the government after the elections, they will implement the domicile policy. BJP ally and Union Minister Chirag Paswan has also raised his voice in favor of the domicile policy, but questioned RJD's commitment to it. Last week, a large number of job aspirants protested in the state capital Patna, demanding the implementation of the domicile policy in government jobs.
