BJP Secures Mumbai Mayor Post After 44 Years
A new political milestone was created on February 11 in India’s financial capital and the country’s richest municipal corporation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator Ritu Tawde was elected unopposed as Mumbai’s 78th Mayor. With this victory, the BJP has regained control of the top post at the BMC headquarters after a gap of 44 years. The last BJP mayor was Dr. Prabhakar Pai in 1982-83.
Unopposed Election
The civic body witnessed significant political activity in the morning. However, as opposition parties, particularly Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress, did not field any candidates, Tawde’s election became a mere formality. Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani officially announced her name.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde were present at the BMC headquarters during the occasion. They stated that in the birth centenary year of Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray, the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance government in BMC would provide clean and transparent governance aligned with his vision.
Major Political Shift in Mumbai
This victory marks not just the election of a mayor but signals a major political shift in Mumbai. For over two and a half decades, the BMC was dominated by the Shiv Sena under Uddhav Thackeray’s leadership.
This time, the BJP, along with its ally (Shinde faction), has secured full control of the civic body. Sanjay Ghadi from the Shinde faction was elected unopposed as Deputy Mayor.
Ritu Tawde’s Vision for Mumbai
In her first address after assuming office, Mayor Ritu Tawde emphasized the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and smart technologies to address the city’s infrastructure challenges. She also stated that strict action would be taken against illegal migrants residing in the city.
The last BMC election was held in 2017. After the tenure of elected representatives ended in 2022, the administration was managed by the Municipal Commissioner. With this election, governance has returned to elected representatives. Ritu Tawde’s tenure will be two and a half years.
