BJP’s Saurabh Joshi Becomes New Mayor of Chandigarh

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday once again captured the Mayor’s post of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. BJP councillor Saurabh Joshi was elected Mayor after securing 18 votes in the 36-member House in a three-cornered contest.

This was the final mayoral election of the current Municipal Corporation term, as the five-year tenure of the civic body is set to conclude in December.

Along with the Mayor’s post, the BJP also registered victories in the Deputy Mayor and Senior Deputy Mayor elections. BJP councillor Suman Sharma was elected Deputy Mayor, while Jasmanpreet Singh was elected Senior Deputy Mayor. Both secured 18 votes each.

In the mayoral contest, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Yogesh Dhingra received 11 votes, while Congress candidate Gurpreet Singh Gabbhi secured 7 votes.

With this victory, the BJP has successfully won the Chandigarh Mayor’s election for the fourth time, further strengthening its position in the city’s municipal governance.
