Christy Coventry Elected as IOC President
Zimbabwe's Minister of Sports and two-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer, Christy Coventry, was elected as the new president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on March 20. Coventry is the first woman and possibly the first African to be elected to this position. In the election held on March 20, 97 members voted in favor of Coventry, while 49 voted against her.
At 41, Coventry will serve as the IOC president until 2033, making her the youngest person to hold this prestigious role. She will succeed the outgoing president, Thomas Bach, whose term will end on June 23. Prior to this, during the 144th session of the IOC, all members voted in favor of including boxing in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. There had been discussions about removing the sport, and it was believed that boxing would not be part of the next Olympic Games. However, it has now been confirmed that boxing will be included, and medals will be awarded for boxing at the 2028 Olympics.
