The announcement was made on the occasion of Commonwealth Day (March 10). According to a press release issued by the Federation, "From Commonwealth Day 2025, the Commonwealth Games Federation will be known as 'Commonwealth Sport'. This new name reflects the organization's journey from a sports federation to a sports movement."
'Commonwealth Sport' Name Strengthens and Unites the Purpose
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Commonwealth Sport, KT Seddon, stated, "'Commonwealth Sport' presents our purpose in a stronger and more unified manner, making our identity more impactful and widespread." However, legally, the organization's name will remain 'Commonwealth Games Federation.'
King Charles Launches the King's Baton Relay
Meanwhile, the patron of Commonwealth Sport, King Charles, officially launched the 'Commonwealth Sport King's Baton Relay' for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Monday at Buckingham Palace. He placed his message for the Commonwealth in the first baton and handed it over to the first runner, Sir Chris Hoy, marking the beginning of this historic relay. This event took place 500 days before the opening ceremony of Glasgow 2026.
Longest Relay Ever
This year's baton relay will be the longest ever, with sports federations from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories having six days to organize their activities.
