While ordering food items online, make sure to check till when the food item is fit for consumption. Is the expiry date of that item less than 45 days? If it is, then you can complain about it to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Recently, FSSAI has given clear instructions to all the food business operators (FBOs) working online that they should deliver only those food items to the consumers whose expiry date is at least 45 days left at that time.
What did FSSAI say - In a meeting with FBOs regarding food safety, FSSAI said that this will create trust in consumers towards them. FBOs were also told not to make any such claim about any food item on the online platform which is not physically present on the label of that item. They will have to strictly follow the labeling and display rules. FBOs were told to provide their delivery boys with complete training to maintain hygiene while delivering food items. They should also provide information to customers about their hygiene rating and FSSAI license and seller registration.
With the objective of providing timely justice to consumers and motivating common people to come forward for complaints, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs may launch the e-Jagriti app on the occasion of Consumer Day on December 24. Complaints can also be registered by speaking on this app. The e-Jagriti portal was launched on December 24 last year, but this portal has not been operational yet. From December 24, this portal can also be fully operational. Once the e-Jagriti portal is operational, consumers will not have to go to the State and District Consumer Court Forum for complaints. They will be able to register a complete complaint by logging in with their mobile phone or email ID. From fees to other related documents will also be uploaded and they will get information about the hearing on the portal and app itself. There will be a facility of virtual hearing and as there is no need for physical presence, the consumer will be able to continuously see his case from anywhere.
More than 5 lakh complaints are registered annually Currently, more than five lakh complaints are registered annually in the consumer court and related forums across the country. Many of these cases remain pending for months due to various reasons. Once the e-Jagrati portal starts working, settlement of cases will become easier and this will make consumers aware of their rights. Currently, ordinary consumers generally refrain from complaining to the consumer forum despite being cheated by a shopkeeper, company or service provider because they are not aware of its process.
