Dr. Chitranjan S. Ranawat, Pioneer of Joint Replacement, Passes Away

World-renowned orthopedic surgeon and pioneer of modern joint replacement surgery, Dr. Chitranjan Singh Ranawat, passed away on November 26 in New York. Born on April 1, 1934, in Sarwania, Neemuch district (Madhya Pradesh), Dr. Ranawat pursued his medical education in Indore before moving to New York to establish his career.

He developed advanced techniques in knee and hip replacement surgery, gaining global recognition. In 2001, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. One of his most notable achievements was successfully performing knee surgery on former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Dr. Ranawat completed his education at Daly College, Holkar Science College, and MGM Medical College, followed by an internship at MY Hospital. After obtaining his MS from Vikram University, he began his research in the United States.

He not only innovated joint replacement procedures but also dedicated himself to educating future surgeons. He trained many orthopedic professionals in Indore, founded the Ranawat Orthopaedic Foundation, and contributed significantly to medical education at Cornell University.

Dr. Ranawat's groundbreaking research and implant designs changed the lives of millions of patients worldwide. He is remembered not only as a legendary surgeon but also as an educator and a source of inspiration. In the world of orthopedic surgery, his legacy is as enduring as Lata Mangeshkar in music or Sachin Tendulkar in cricket.
