e-Passport Launch: Travel Made Easier with Chip Technology

On the occasion of the 13th Passport Seva Day, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, on June 24, appreciated the contribution of passport officials in India and abroad, linking the changes in passport services to the country’s development. He hailed the formal launch of Passport Seva Programme (PSP) 2.0 and the e-passport facility as a significant achievement. The Foreign Minister stated that 'service, good governance, and welfare of the poor' are the three pillars of governance, under which passport services have now become more transparent, faster, and accessible. He mentioned that this initiative is a strong step towards a developed India.

Nationwide Rollout of PSP 2.0 and e-passports

Jaishankar announced that PSP 2.0 has been implemented across the country, promoting efficiency and transparency through advanced technologies. The Ministry of External Affairs is also working towards implementing it globally, with pilot tests being conducted in Indian embassies.

The e-passport, which is a chip-based smart document, not only makes the process easier for travelers but also speeds up immigration clearance.

Record Passport Issuance in a Decade

Jaishankar highlighted that in 2014, 9.1 million passports were issued, whereas in 2024, the number is expected to reach 14.6 million. This reflects the increasing efficiency of the Passport Department and its ability to meet the growing needs of citizens.

Faster Passport Verification

Jaishankar shared that with the mPassport Police App, the police verification time has been reduced to 5-7 days in 25 states and union territories, making the passport issuance process even faster.

10 New Passport Seva Kendras and Mobile Van Service

In the past year, 10 new Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSK) have been opened. The 450th POPSK will be inaugurated in Kushinagar in April 2025. Additionally, the Ministry’s mobile van service has reached remote areas of the country, providing convenience to citizens in rural and border regions.

A Step Towards Citizen-Centric Service

Jaishankar emphasized that the Government of India prioritizes citizen convenience, and passport services are continuously being enhanced. PSP 2.0 and the e-passport initiative are solid examples of this commitment.
