On January 7, an earthquake in Tibet claimed the lives of 126 people. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1. Its epicenter was located in Dingri, Tibet, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The earthquake struck at 6:30 AM Indian Standard Time. Even after 15 hours since the disaster, rescue operations are still ongoing. Chinese President Xi Jinping has instructed authorities to take all possible steps to help the victims of the earthquake.

According to China's official news agency Xinhua, nearly 1,000 homes were damaged in the earthquake. Within 3 hours of the initial tremor, around 50 aftershocks of magnitude 4.4 occurred. The China Earthquake Networks Center reported that the earthquake was the most powerful in the region in the last five years, occurring within a 200-kilometer (124-mile) radius.

The tremors were felt as far as Nepal, India, and Bangladesh. Previously, in December 2023, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake in China's Gansu province claimed the lives of 151 people.
