In a significant move for farmers, the central government has announced that if there is a delay in crop insurance payments, farmers will be compensated with 12% interest annually. Previously, crop damage assessments were carried out through on-site inspections during crop cutting. However, now the government has decided to use a satellite-based system for damage assessments.
Under the crop insurance scheme, more than ₹1.7 lakh crore in claims have already been paid. The scheme is jointly operated by the central and state governments. The government launched the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) in 2016.
The new system will use satellite technology to assess crop damage, particularly from natural disasters such as floods, droughts, and other climatic events. This will allow for more accurate and timely assessments using remote sensing.
If insurance companies delay compensation payments, they will be required to pay the farmers an additional 12% interest annually on the delayed amount.
