Former Cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin Takes Oath as Minister in Telangana

Former cricketer and MLC Mohammad Azharuddin was sworn in as a minister in the Telangana government on October 31. The oath was administered by Telangana Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan at Raj Bhavan. Azharuddin is now the 16th minister of the state.

Political Controversy

The BJP opposed Azharuddin’s induction, claiming that it violates the model code of conduct because by-elections are scheduled on the Jubilee Hills constituency. BJP alleged that the Congress is engaging in appeasement politics. On October 31, BJP filed a complaint with the State Election Commission.

Jubilee Hills By-election Context

The by-election for the Jubilee Hills assembly seat is scheduled for November 11. Muslim voters constitute around 30% of the electorate in this constituency. It is believed that Azharuddin’s entry into the cabinet could benefit Congress. Azharuddin had previously lost from this seat in 2023.

Muslim Representation in Telangana Cabinet

Before Azharuddin joined, the Telangana Congress government did not have any Muslim ministers. His induction addresses concerns over Muslim representation in the cabinet. With Azharuddin, the Revanth Reddy cabinet now has 16 ministers, while the maximum allowed is 18.
