The 6.4% GDP growth in FY 2025 is disappointing, with headline growth being quite weak during the COVID period, but between FY 2016 and FY 2020, the average GVA and GDP growth were 6.4% and 6.7% respectively.

According to the first advance estimates released by the National Statistical Office (NSO), the real GDP growth rate is expected to slow down sharply to 6.4% in the current financial year (FY 25), down from 8.2% in FY 24. Nominal GDP growth remained more stable at 9.7% in FY 25, compared to 9.6% in the previous financial year.

This growth compares unfavorably with the 10.5% growth estimated by the central government when forecasting for the budget in July. However, the government is unlikely to be overly concerned about achieving the fiscal deficit target of 4.9% of GDP, as excellent revenue collection and weak capital expenditure suggest significant savings potential.

The real growth slowdown in FY 25 looks more pronounced, but it may be overstated. The estimate for value addition on the supply side, as captured in the Gross Value Added (GVA) metric, is generally more reliable than the demand-side measure for GDP production in the case of India. Typically, the gap between these two metrics is minor, with both reflecting a 6.4% growth in FY 25. However, this was not the case in FY 24 when GDP growth was a full percentage point higher than GVA, which was pegged at 7.2%. Nevertheless, the estimated 6.4% growth for both GVA and GDP still remains below the trend growth or potential growth of the economy.
