The fifth edition of Goa Maritime Symposium (GMS) 2024 was organised by the Indian Navy under the aegis of Naval War College, Goa from 23-24 September 24. This edition of Goa Maritime Symposium was held at the newly constructed, state-of-the-art Chola Bhawan of the Naval War College. The theme of this year’s GMS edition was ‘Common Maritime Security Challenges in the IOR – Progressive Efforts to Mitigate Dynamic Threats like IUU Fishing and Other Illegal Maritime Activities’. The theme was underpinned by the idea of ‘Security and Growth for All in the Region’ (SAGAR) propounded by the Hon’ble Prime Minister to ensure prosperity in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Goa Maritime Symposium 24 brought together regional stakeholders to discuss strategies to address non-traditional threats in the maritime domain in the IOR. The GMS participants included officers of Captain/Commander equivalent rank from navies/maritime security agencies of friendly countries. The symposium discussed collaborative information-sharing mechanisms, various measures to strengthen regional cooperation and mitigate emerging non-traditional threats. The deliberations during the Goa Maritime Symposium will act as a feeder to the Goa Maritime Conference scheduled in 2025.
