Gopichand P. Hinduja, Chairman of Hinduja Group, Passes Away at 85
Gopichand P. Hinduja, one of India's most prominent industrialists and the Chairman of the Hinduja Group, passed away in London on November 4 at the age of 85. His demise has sent waves of sorrow throughout the business community. His contribution to the fields of business and social service is regarded as truly unforgettable.
After the passing of his elder brother Srichand Hinduja in 2023, Gopichand took over the leadership of the group. Born on February 29, 1940, he joined the family business in Mumbai in 1959. Under his leadership, the Hinduja Group transformed from a traditional trading company into a global industrial empire, expanding across banking, finance, energy, infrastructure, media, and the automobile sectors.
During his tenure, the group made some of its landmark acquisitions — including Gulf Oil in 1984 and Ashok Leyland in 1987. These acquisitions became among the largest investments by the Indian diaspora in India.
In recognition of his outstanding business achievements, Gopichand Hinduja received honorary Doctorate of Law from Westminster University and an honorary Doctorate of Economics from Richmond College.
