The Government of India on August 5 announced the National Science Awards (RPV) for Indian scientists. The award ceremony will be held on August 23 on the first National Space Day at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre. Dr Bappi Paul of the School of Engineering and Technology, National Forensic Sciences University, Gandhinagar was awarded the RPV Vigyan Yuva Puraskar. The other awardees include Dr Purabi Saikia, Associate Professor Botanist, Department of Botany, Banaras Hindu University and Professor Vivek Polshettywar, Nanotechnology Expert, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. The Vigyan Shri Award will be presented to Professor Rohit Srivastava of IIT Bombay. Every year, the Government of India honours 15 scientists in the field of science, technology and innovation. The awards are given in four categories: Vigyan Ratna, Vigyan Shree, Vigyan Yuva and Vigyan Team.

The winners are selected in 13 fields - Physics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Mathematics, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Medicine, Engineering, Agriculture, Environmental Science, Technology and Innovation, Atomic Energy, Space Science and Technology. Each award will carry a certificate and a medal.
