Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake appointed Harini Amarasuriya as the Prime Minister of the country on 25 September. Apart from the post of Prime Minister, Amarasuriya has been given the responsibility of important ministries like Justice, Education, Health and Investment. Harini is the third woman to hold the post of Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. Before her, Sirimao Bandaranaike (3 times) and Chandrika Kumaratunga (1 time) have been the female Prime Ministers of the country. Harini Amarasuriya became an MP for the first time in 2020. Before becoming an MP, Harini was a social worker and a professor at a university. No woman has become the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka since 2000. Apart from this, Vijitha Heerth and Lakshman Nipunarachchi also took oath as cabinet ministers. The Sri Lankan cabinet has a total of 4 members including the President and the Prime Minister. This is the smallest cabinet in the history of Sri Lanka. Earlier, on 23 September, Anura Dissanayake was sworn in as the 10th President of Sri Lanka. Anura defeated the current President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who has been the PM of Sri Lanka for 6 times. This is the first time in Sri Lanka that the results of the presidential election became clear in the second round of counting, because no candidate got 50% votes in the first round of counting.
