India Becomes Third-Largest Renewable Energy Producer

India has surpassed Germany to become the world's third-largest producer of electricity from wind and solar energy in 2024, according to the Global Electricity Review 2024 by Ember, a global energy think tank.

Global Renewable Energy Landscape

In 2024, renewable sources accounted for 30% of global electricity generation, driven by significant growth in solar and wind energy. India contributed 10% to this global share, marking a significant milestone in its renewable energy journey.

India's Renewable Energy Achievements

India's renewable energy capacity has seen remarkable growth. In 2023, the country added over 18 terawatt-hours (TWh) of solar energy, increasing its solar generation to 5.8% of the total electricity mix. This achievement propelled India to overtake Japan, becoming the third-largest solar power generator globally.

Future Outlook

Looking ahead, India aims to further expand its renewable energy capacity. The government plans to add 35 gigawatts (GW) of solar and wind energy to the grid by March 2025, with a total target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. Achieving this goal will require significant investments and policy support.
