India Becomes World's Second Largest 5G User
Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has announced that India has become the world's second largest 5G user, with over 400 million 5G subscribers. He highlighted that India is among the fastest countries in adopting 5G technology, with China holding the first position.
In a social media post, Scindia mentioned that since its launch in 2022, 5G services are now available across the country, covering 85% of the population. By March 2025, telecom companies had installed 469,000 5G base transceiver stations, marking the fastest expansion of 5G services. Approximately 250 million mobile users are currently using 5G services.
Improved Rural Connectivity and Internet Growth
The minister added that connectivity in remote areas has also improved, with rural telephone connections increasing by 42.9%. In March 2014, rural telephone connections were 37.77 crore, which rose to 53.98 crore by September 2025. India has also crossed the milestone of 1 billion internet connections, reaching 1.0029 billion, reflecting a 298.77% increase since March 2014. In line with the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” vision, the expansion of indigenous networks is accelerating.
India has also become the fifth country in the world to develop 4G technology.
