India Census 2027: First Fully Digital Census with 6-Layer Security
India’s Census 2027 will be the country’s first fully digital census, where data will be collected through mobile devices to ensure accurate and detailed information for better policymaking.
According to an official fact sheet released on Saturday, the census will introduce several new features, including near real-time monitoring through the Census Management and Monitoring System (CMMS) portal, self-enumeration options, and extensive use of geo-referenced mapping.
The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs decided on April 30, 2025, to include caste enumeration in Census 2027. Earlier, only Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) were systematically counted in previous censuses, including the 2011 census.
The government has allocated ₹11,718.24 crore for the project and implemented strong data security systems to protect sensitive information.
The Census 2027 will be conducted in two phases to ensure structured and comprehensive data collection across the country. With secure data centers and a large workforce, the census aims to provide reliable insights for inclusive and targeted policymaking.
The census is expected to help better understand population trends and improve planning in sectors such as food, water, energy, and infrastructure. It will also support accurate local-level planning to ensure government schemes reach the right beneficiaries.
