India Holds Nearly Three Times Required Foodgrain Stock

India is currently in a strong position in terms of foodgrain availability. The total stock of wheat and rice in the central pool has reached nearly three times the required level, marking a significant achievement for food security.

According to data from the Food Corporation of India (FCI), the country had around 60.4 million tonnes of foodgrain in stock by the first week of April, compared to the minimum buffer requirement of 21 million tonnes.

This indicates that India is not only self-sufficient in foodgrain production but has also reached a surplus position. Procurement of new crops at Minimum Support Price (MSP) is ongoing, which will further strengthen food security.

However, such a large stock also poses challenges for the government in terms of storage and management. As per FCI data, wheat stock stands at around 21.8 million tonnes, while rice stock is about 38.6 million tonnes, both well above their buffer norms.

Notably, wheat stock has increased by approximately 85% compared to last year, reflecting improved production and strong government procurement. Rice stock is also close to record levels.

This situation brings relief in multiple ways. It ensures that there will be no shortage of foodgrain during emergencies or supply disruptions and helps in controlling inflation.

The government can release grains under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) to stabilize prices when needed.

A strong foodgrain reserve also allows the government to take flexible policy decisions. Recently, partial relaxation in wheat export restrictions allowing up to 5 million tonnes for export reflects this approach.

This move aims to maintain India’s presence in the global market while utilizing surplus stock efficiently and reducing storage challenges.

Market experts believe that adequate stock also protects farmers' interests, as the government continues procurement at MSP, reducing the risk of falling prices and ensuring fair returns for farmers.
