India-Italy Relationship Upgraded to Special Strategic Partnership
On 20 May 2026, India and Italy upgraded their bilateral relationship to a Special Strategic Partnership, strengthening ties between the two nations. Earlier, the relationship was only at the level of a strategic partnership.
The decision was taken during a meeting in Rome between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Key Outcomes of the Meeting
Both leaders reviewed the India-Italy Joint Action Plan (2025–29) and discussed strengthening cooperation across all sectors.
A permanent coordination mechanism led by the foreign ministers of both countries will be established to monitor the implementation of the action plan.
Both sides agreed to increase bilateral trade to €20 billion by 2029.
Trade, EU Deal & Global Cooperation
PM Modi and PM Meloni also discussed the India-EU Free Trade Agreement.
Italy stated that India-Italy relations have entered a decisive phase and are now based on shared democratic values, freedom, and future vision.
Joint Stand on Terrorism
Both countries agreed to deepen cooperation in combating terrorism.
India and Italy emphasized that terrorism is a serious threat to humanity and stressed the need to dismantle its financial networks globally.
Both nations also reaffirmed that solutions to global conflicts must come through diplomacy and dialogue.

PM Modi visited Italy as part of his tour to European countries including the UAE, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy.
PM Meloni welcomed PM Modi with a dinner in Rome, followed by a visit to the Colosseum, one of the oldest and largest amphitheatres in the world.

PM Modi gifted Italian PM Giorgia Meloni a special candy pack named “Melody”, a playful blend of their names.
