India-Qatar Relations: Strategic Partnership

In the Gulf region, Qatar has become the fifth country with which India has established a strategic partnership in bilateral relations. This decision was made during a meeting on the 18th between Qatar's Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where an agreement was also signed.

Qatar is one of the six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and now India has established strategic relations with five of these countries, including Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman, and Kuwait. During the meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Amir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, discussions were held to strengthen business and economic relations. However, with the strategic partnership now in place, the path is open for greater cooperation between the two nations in the defense and security sectors.

Experts believe that the Modi government has started giving priority to relations with Gulf countries in the past five years, which aligns with India's strategic interests. Over one crore (10 million) Indians are employed and conducting business in the region, and in 2023, they sent nearly 27 billion USD to India.
