India has been re-elected to Category 'B' of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council. India secured 169 votes out of 154, making it one of the top contenders in this category. The council’s term will be for 2026-2027.
The elections for the IMO Council were held through a secret ballot during the 34th session of the IMO Assembly in London. Category 'B' includes ten countries with the highest interest in international maritime trade. An official statement confirmed India’s continued strong support in the IMO to serve the global maritime sector.
The IMO Council consists of 40 elected members from 176 IMO member countries. It functions between the sessions of the Assembly. During the 34th IMO Assembly, the Indian delegation held meetings with representatives from other countries, international organizations, and IMO officials to discuss areas of mutual interest.
