Record Production of Rice, Wheat and Coarse Cereals in India
India has witnessed the biggest jump in the agriculture sector in the past 10 years, with the total foodgrain production crossing 357.73 million tonnes. Union Agriculture & Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan released the final crop production estimates for 2024–25 in New Delhi on Thursday. He expressed gratitude to the farmers for achieving record foodgrain production and welcomed the encouraging rise in pulses and oilseed crops.
The Minister stated that this is the highest increase in foodgrain production recorded in the last decade. In 2015–16, total production stood at 251.54 million tonnes, which has now increased by 106 million tonnes, reaching 357.73 million tonnes. This significant growth reflects the remarkable progress in the agriculture sector under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Record Growth in Rice and Wheat
The production of rice has reached an all-time high of 150.184 million tonnes, an increase of 12.359 million tonnes from last year's 137.825 million tonnes. Similarly, wheat production has increased to 117.945 million tonnes, which is 4.653 million tonnes higher than last year’s 113.292 million tonnes.
Moong production stands at 4.244 million tonnes, soybean at 15.268 million tonnes, and groundnut at 11.942 million tonnes, all marking record increases. The estimated production of maize is 43.409 million tonnes and of Shree Anna (nutri-cereals) is 18.592 million tonnes, compared to last year’s 37.665 million tonnes and 17.572 million tonnes respectively.
Promising Growth in Pulses and Oilseeds
The Union Minister expressed satisfaction over the significant rise in pulses and oilseeds. In 2024–25, total oilseed production is estimated to be a record 42.989 million tonnes, which is 3.32 million tonnes higher than last year’s 39.669 million tonnes.
The increase in oilseed production is primarily due to higher output of groundnut (11.942 million tonnes) and soybean (15.268 million tonnes). Additionally, rapeseed and mustard production is estimated at 12.667 million tonnes.
