India Records Highest Road Accidents and Deaths in May for Second Consecutive Year

Road accidents in India are on a continuous rise. In 2022, there were 4.61 lakh (461,000) reported road accidents, which increased to 4.80 lakh (480,000) in 2023. According to a recent report by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the majority of road accidents in India occur between 6 PM and 9 PM.

Every day, road accident cases make the headlines. While some people suffer serious injuries, many lose their lives. To prevent such tragedies, the government has enforced several safety rules — but unfortunately, many people fail to follow them, leading to preventable accidents.

India continues to top the list of countries with the highest number of road accident cases. Shockingly, 12 people per 100,000 population lose their lives on Indian roads annually.

Key Findings from the Transport Ministry Report

  • In 2023, India recorded 480,000 road accidents.
  • These accidents caused 172,000 deaths and injured 462,000 people.
  • This represents a 2.6% increase in deaths and a 4.4% increase in injuries compared to 2022.
  • The month of May witnessed the highest number of accidents and fatalities for two consecutive years.

What’s most alarming is the upward trend. In 2022, the number of road accidents was 4.61 lakh (461,000), meaning the cases have gone up in just one year. The need for stricter road safety measures and awareness campaigns is more crucial than ever.
