India Set to Become a Major Defense Exporter as Global Demand for Indigenous Weapons Surges

Following the successful deployment of indigenous defense systems such as BrahMos missiles, Akash air defense systems, loitering munitions, and the Netra surveillance platform during Operation Sindoor, international demand for Indian-made military equipment has increased significantly.

Several countries have expressed interest in acquiring these advanced defense systems, while contracts worth thousands of crores of rupees have already been signed. The total value of ongoing and finalized export agreements exceeds ₹21,000 crore.

According to the Ministry of Defence, India's defense exports reached a record ₹38,424 crore during the financial year 2025-26, representing a remarkable 62% increase compared to the previous year.

BrahMos and Akash Drive Export Growth

Export agreements for the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system worth approximately ₹12,500 crore have already been concluded with the Philippines, Vietnam, and two other countries.

In addition, a defense deal with Indonesia valued at around ₹3,600 crore is currently in the final stage of approval.

India has also secured a contract worth ₹6,100 crore from Armenia for the export of the Akash surface-to-air missile system, further strengthening its position in the global defense market.

Defense Exports Reach More Than 100 Countries

India now exports defense equipment and military components to more than 100 countries worldwide. Key export destinations include the United States, France, Armenia, and several countries in Southeast Asia.

The United States remains India's largest defense export market, importing military systems and components worth approximately $2.8 billion. These supplies support major global defense companies, including Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

While countries such as the United States primarily purchase defense components and subsystems, nations like Armenia are increasingly acquiring complete Indian-made weapon systems.

Government Targets ₹50,000 Crore in Defense Exports

The Government of India has set an ambitious target of achieving ₹50,000 crore in annual defense exports by the financial year 2029-30.

The growth trajectory has been extraordinary. In 2016-17, India's defense exports stood at only ₹1,522 crore. In less than a decade, exports have increased by more than 25 times, reflecting the rapid expansion of India's defense manufacturing capabilities and global competitiveness.

The international attention received after Operation Sindoor is expected to accelerate this momentum further, opening new opportunities for Indian defense manufacturers and strengthening the country's position as a major global supplier of military technology.
