India to Present Its Counter-Terrorism and Maritime Security Strategy at UN

India has highlighted the importance of terrorism and maritime security as key global issues. The country has stated that its national security strategy includes a strong focus on both terrorism and maritime security, which are essential for global peace and stability. India has emphasized the significance of these issues at the United Nations (UN), making them critical to national security. With its assertive stance on combating terrorism and enhancing maritime security, India has raised concerns for adversary nations.

India's permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Harish Parvathneni, said that the country considers maritime security and counter-terrorism essential from the perspective of national security and economic interests. In light of emerging threats and geopolitical changes in the Indo-Pacific region, India is continuously strengthening its strategy. On Tuesday, Ambassador Harish addressed the UN Security Council on the topic "Strengthening Maritime Security through International Cooperation for Global Stability," during a high-level open debate. He emphasized, "India has a long coastline and is a country with powerful naval capabilities, and as a responsible maritime power, we play an active role in protecting our interests."

India's maritime strategy is based on a balance between strong defense capabilities, regional diplomacy, international cooperation, and domestic infrastructure development. India believes that maritime security is the foundation of economic progress, as key trade routes, energy supplies, and strategic interests are linked to the oceans. India also made it clear that it fully supports the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to promote a free, open, and rules-based order in the maritime domain.

On this occasion, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that to ensure maritime security, all countries must adhere to the UN Charter and international maritime laws. He also warned that maritime piracy, smuggling, organized crime, and terrorism pose serious challenges to global peace, trade, and economic stability. The Security Council continues its efforts to address these threats.
