The confrontation between the soldiers of India and China in Depsang and Demchok along the LAC has ended. The soldiers of both the countries have started patrolling. At present, patrolling has started in Demchok. It will also start soon in Depsang. There was a military confrontation between India and China on these two forward fronts for about four and a half years. Ending the confrontation in Depsang and Demchok along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, India and China have started patrolling after withdrawing the troops. According to military sources, the Indian Army started patrolling with its patrolling party on the forward front of Demchok on 31 October. Patrolling will soon be started by Indian soldiers in the Depsang area as well.
The resumption of patrolling after the military confrontation between India and China on these two forward fronts of LAC for about four and a half years is considered a big step towards ending the LAC deadlock. Giving the message of moving forward towards reducing tension on the border, the soldiers of India and China exchanged sweets after a long time on the day of Diwali not only in eastern Ladakh but also on the forward fronts of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. Confirming the resumption of patrolling in Demchok after four and a half years, military sources said that the Indian Army has patrolled as per the agreed agreement. During this time they did not face any kind of obstruction. As per the agreement between India and China to end the Depsang and Demchok conflict, both sides have to share advance information of their patrolling with each other.
Accordingly, Indian soldiers patrolled up to the front line in the Demchok area with their patrol team of about 12-15 soldiers on 31 October. The Indian Army's stand was clear from the beginning that ensuring the pre-April 2020 situation in both these places would be the basis of the agreement. Therefore, it is believed that the latest agreement has restored the previous situation in both these areas after four and a half years. As per the agreement to end the Depsang and Demchok conflict, India and China will keep a maximum of 15 soldiers in their patrolling team. The source also said that after verifying each other's information after the withdrawal of the soldiers, sweets were exchanged between Indian and Chinese soldiers on the day of Diwali at some other forward fronts of the LAC including Depsang and Demchok. Apart from these two forward fronts, sweets were also distributed at all the five border-meeting points on the LAC. This included Bum La and Wacha-Kibithu in Arunachal Pradesh, Chushul-Moldo and Daulat Beg Oldi in Ladakh and Nathu La in Sikkim, among others.
The process of dialogue between the two countries at the level of local commanders will continue to resolve other issues of confrontation on the LAC. Meanwhile, in Itanagar, Union Parliamentary and Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju celebrated Diwali with Indian soldiers at Bum La in Arunachal Pradesh. On this occasion, he praised the developments on the Indian border and said in a post on X, 'After talking to Chinese soldiers and seeing the infrastructure, everyone now feels proud of the development of the Indian border.' In another tweet, he said that Diwali was celebrated at the Tawang military helipad during the day. Our brave soldiers have made us proud and we are grateful to them. It is because of their commitment and courage that our country is safe.
