ITR Filing Deadline Extended to 16 September 2025 - Over 7.3 Crore Returns Filed
Income Tax Return Deadline Extended by One Day: Today is the Last Chance
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the last date to file Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the Assessment Year 2025-26 by one day. The new deadline is 16 September 2025, instead of the earlier 15 September.
As per the official circular issued late night by CBDT, the extension was provided due to technical reasons. The department had earlier extended the deadline from 31 July to 15 September 2025.
ITR Filing Statistics:
- More than 7.3 crore taxpayers have filed ITRs so far.
- This number is around 2 lakh more compared to the previous year.
- In the assessment year 2024–25, approximately 7.28 crore returns were filed.
Reason for Extension:
The deadline was extended primarily because of changes in the ITR forms for FY 2024–25, which required updates in the ITR filing tools and the department’s back-end systems.
Key Points:
- New ITR deadline: 16 September 2025
- Previous deadline: 15 September 2025
- Initial deadline was: 31 July 2025
- This is the third extension due to system updates and technical challenges.
Note: If you haven’t filed your ITR yet, make sure to do it today to avoid penalties.
