Joharan Mamdani Takes Oath as New York's 112th Mayor

34-year-old Joharan Mamdani, of Indian descent, took the oath as the 112th Mayor of New York City in a private ceremony. Mamdani has become the first South Asian and Muslim to lead the largest city in the United States. He swore on the Quran, marking the first time a New York City mayor has taken the oath on the Quran.

The ceremony was attended only by Mamdani's family and close advisors. The formal oath was taken in a private ceremony held at an old subway station, which is one of the original stops of New York's oldest underground transport line. This historical station has been closed to the public since 1945 and is rarely opened.

Joharan Mamdani is the son of the famous filmmaker Meera Nair and Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani. Born and raised in Kampala, Uganda, he moved to New York City with his family at the age of seven. He became a U.S. citizen in 2018.

Mamdani previously mentioned that his oath ceremony symbolizes the beginning of a new era for the city, one that places the hardworking people of New York at the forefront.
